Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia 2005

In 1993, I moved to Nova Scotia to live on the Atlantic Ocean. I found a 19th Century home on a 3 acre point in need of great renovation. Thus began more than a decade of design and home construction education as I worked with skilled craftsmen to recreate a traveler's home with authentic details.

Photgraphy by Janet Kimber

  • I discovered an antique stained glass dealer at the bass of the the cathedral in Chartres. Painted and stained glass was salvaged from houses torn down around Europe. These scenes looked very much like the view beyond our windows. The entry table is a French desk with a Italian Majolica vase.
  • The stairs were rebuilt to code with styles from patterns in catalogs of the 19th century. The wainscoting is individual beaded boards of clear pine. The hall floors are italan tiles with inset granite tiles to be garden steps. The logo of brass was made in Lunenburg.
  • A 19th Century bench waits in the hall with a painting collected in China, from a 1987 adventure. Beyond is a painting from The Outback of Australia, circa 1985.

  • More stained glass discovered in Chartres, a custom chandelier forged in Lunenburg, and furniture from across Canada.

  • This is the original stairrail of the house moved up from the main floor. The new balasters are elongated versions of the originals to add height. Another stain glass window from Chartres is in the background.
